Story Summary
Likes:
Human Life- This Dane spends many a night wishing that he has legs. He wants to experience what the humans in the stories do and walk barefoot in the grass and look at the sun setting on the beach in the warm sand. But other than that for himself, he wants to know what it is like to go shopping and ride a horse, and drink something other than water. It all interests him.
Center of Attention- He likes to make a big scene of himself, and be the center of attention. If all eyes aren’t on him, then they are in the wrong place.
Hugs- Mathias loves hugs and cuddling and all that. He can be described as a hug monster that creepers on unsuspecting victims just to give them a nice warm hug. He is quite touchy-feely, and he is even more so if he likes you. Not surprising at all is that he can spend hours just… cuddling.
Singing- By mermaid standards, Mathias isn't the best. He tends to sing much more loudly than the other mermaids and as an added bonus he enjoys adding his own flamboyancies and dances to his singing, and as much shunning as he gets from it sometimes, he still loves it. Very, very much.
Children- He particularly has fun with kids because they don't know what a troublemaker he can be. They don't really understand why the adults give him dirty looks, and that makes him happy. He feels like he can truly act like himself and it gives a sense of fulfillment.
Shiny things- After all, he comes from a family of jewelers, so anything that is jewelry-like in touch and feeling, fascinates him… and hidden away in his room is a plethora of nice objects and shiny things that he has gathered over time.
Dislikes:
Being interrupted- Is not good. It frustrates him, and him being frustrated can lead to one grumpy Dane. Which no one wants cause that then leads to fists fights… which this kid is quite notorious for starting.
Bullies- But he also can’t stand people picking on those who are smaller than themselves, so while he hates it when the little guys won’t stand up for themselves, he will always protect them. He feels that he has to. This standing up for the little guys is also a part of the big brother image he has somehow managed to earn over time. He is quite defensive towards the little guys.
Feeling like an outcast- Well really, who enjoys this feeling? But this particular thing is a feeling of constant distant for Mathias because about ninety-nine percent of the time, Mathias feels distinctly out of place in the underwater realm. He doesn't know if it is just him, or not but regardless he still feels those stares. He really does.
The lake- No if's, ands, or buts about it, he absolutely hates his underwater home. He doesn't understand why he has to be stuck in such a cold murky place that lacks stars and sunshine and mountains and forests. He wishes he could at least live in the ocean... But unfortunately he has no way to get there.
Any special traits or habits/quirks:
• He can also make some pretty cool jewelry, but he probably won’t admit or tell you that.
• He can sing crazy good and he’s a good swimmer.
• He also carries around an axe. :< Yes a waterproof one.
• He tends to be quite, not even quite, very naive and not really understanding of the non-underwater world, but just like the Little Mermaid, he is very curious about it.
• He doesn't really comprehend the fact that humans can't breathe underwater, so please don't let him pull you into the water with him... He likes making new friends and him forgetting that fact that humans can't breathe often results in trouble because of this.
• He spaces out more than should be legally possible. He'll probably space out on you in the middle of your long monologue.... Yes Mathias is a teensy bit ADD... okay a lot ADD.
Fears:
Closed spaces- He hates them. Simple as that. He likes the open spaces and actually does have a fear of being stuck in a small place where he can't move his arms and can't swim around with at least some degree of freedom.
The lake monster- Mermaids that live in the lake are taught at a young age to fear the lake monster. So it only makes sense that Mathias dreads seeing the thing. Not that his fear of it stops him from going places he shouldn't be going.
People's thoughts- He is very curious of what people think of him, but at the same time, it is his biggest fear. He tries so hard to be liked that when he finds out a person truer, more negative feelings towards him, it really crushes his spirit, and as a result, he does his best to ignore those... However it doesn't always work out, and as such he has developed a fear of being hurt.

The Story
If they happened upon a fairy godmother, what would they wish for?:
He actually, really, really does want legs. He’s bored of swimming around in murky lake water.
Personality:
Although he is in late teens/early adulthood in mermaid years, Mathias tends to act like he is twelve years old. He talks very loudly, behaves very loudly, and is quite the showoff. He has boundless energy and it is very obvious he has no idea what to do with it all most of the time other than swim around in circles for hours on end. His restlessness leaves him very easily confused and often times it results in him not taking a moment to think about anything before he speaks.
This restlessness leaves him with a rather insatiable curiosity that no matter what he does he can’t really seem to shake it. Most of the time he doesn’t even know what he is curious about, so it isn’t hard to find him breaking rules and causing trouble where he knows he shouldn’t be.
Mathias also tends to be a bit aggressive around people he doesn’t know too well. He hates injustices and insecurities and he hates seeing his friends being picked on. He tends to be very defensive of those he knows and that are close to him, and if the chance came to it, he would end up defending them with his life.
Other than that though, he is pretty laid back, and not much really seems to make him snap. Well, at least in front of other people he will not snap. But when he is alone, and given time to think, he really does get frustrated. And when he is frustrated or angry, he tends to take out his anger on other people or even inanimate objects. It isn’t rare to see him breaking some of his own jewelry or belongings simply because he doesn’t know how to handle his anger.
Mathias is a very fun person in general. He doesn’t have a hard time at all making friends and in fact, he will often times even talk to the shy people and attempt to make friends with them. In fact Mathias could probably make friends with a wall if he had no one to talk to... Shush up, life at the bottom of a lake can be pretty boring!!
You can't also forgot a few of Mathias' bad traits, such as the fact that he can be quite dense at times, and that's not because he hasn't heard of something, it's more like he isn't very good at drawing lines between things and making connections. But when he does, oh you can bet he'll be super happy.
This kid can also be a bit... ummm overly bossy and competitive. He doesn't mean it, but LOSING ISN'T AN OPTION RIGHT!? But trust me when I saw this, you don't want to be caught playing the game of Taboo with Mathias... He might just end up going all crazy and screaming at you if you aren't hurrying or giving him good enough clues or just all in all sucking.
Mathias is VERY, VERY defensive of those he loves. And if you are his enemy, you might want to be extra careful around him, because if he ever catches you picking on one of his friends, you can bet you'd be getting your ass whooped. Yes Mathias is quite a loyal friend.
Last but not least, it's hard to find Mathias with a frown on his face. He's pretty arrogant, and it's pretty bad that he knows that he is good looking, and not afraid to say so, because it's quite sad how much time this kid puts into his hairs, and don't even get me started on his teeth.
Story/History:
Mathias was born to a family of mermaids under the ocean many, many years ago. He grew up with quite a happy and privileged life, and had many friends. His parents had quite a bit of money and were almost just as influential. But of course, no matter how things worked out, it always seemed like trouble was just around the corner for Mathias and his family.
You see, another family had it out for the Andersen’s. This family was another, less influential but just as rich family of mermaids who had earned their money from the same jewelry selling business that Mathias' family had. But it seemed that no matter how hard the other family tried, customers chose the Andersen family jewelers over them, time and time again.
So the family hatched a plan to get the Andersen’s "relocated" so to speak. They spoke to everyone in the ocean kingdom, eventually coming across a sea witch who had struck a deal with a band of pirates. The witch told them that the pirates were on the hunt for a group of mermaids to put on display anyway, so all the other family had to do was lure them to a specific area where the pirates would then catch the Andersen’s and take them out of the other family's lives for good.
The other family was then able to lure the Andersen’s away from their home to the spot into the middle of the ocean by promises of a hidden mine they had found that was filled with riches and jewels beyond your wildest imagination, and that from this mine, they would both quickly become the best jewelry business that ever existed under the sea.
The Andersen’s were naturally excited by the prospect of finding rare jewels and finally getting a chance to cooperate with their rivals, so they eagerly followed the other family to a spot smack in the middle of the ocean.
But before the excited family even got a chance to question their whereabouts, they were snatched up by the band of pirates and tossed into shallow puddles of water in the hull of the ship, where they sat for three days until they were pulled out, cold, miserable, and alone, and tossed into large individual tanks inside of a fancy seafood restaurant.
That is where our story takes us to Mathias' perspective. You see, by this point he growing into a rather energetic young man with a passion to go out and see the world. But being trapped in this tank left him with nothing to do and nowhere to go. He could hardly even move his arms, let alone swim anyway, and it wasn't very long before he grew into a deep depression.
He ended up losing his appetite, not fighting back when adults banged on the glass, or making silly faces at the children who marveled at his presence. His heart hurt, and it hurt bad. He knew that if he continued down this path of constant depression, he would end up dying. So he devised a plan to escape.
You see, it was during this time that Mathias gained an interest in humans. He learned that in a situation of panic, humans tended to well...panic, and on top of that, humans also sometimes talked so much that while they were eating, a lot of the time they would end up choking. Watching the choking humans gave Mathias the idea himself to pretend that he was choking one day.
Upon seeing the choking mermaid, the people of the restaurant began to panic, until he was pulled out of the tank and squeezed so tightly around the abdomen that he ended up throwing up what tiny bits of food he had eaten until he was lazily tossed back into the tank.
At this careless treatment, Mathias grew incredibly angry, and began to pound on the glass with such force that soon the cheap tank that had kept him trapped for two years split directly down the middle and eventually broke, sending him bouncing into a table of diners, who upon seeing the mermaid out of the water and the broken tank, began to lose their minds, sending the entire restaurant into chaos.
After the panic and confusion died down, extensive damage had been caused to the place, so much so that this left the pirates who owned the restaurant in a bad jam. And being in a bad jam, well, it made the pirates very, very angry.
As a result, they grabbed the frail mermaid and tossed him in the cleaning closet, from which he thought he was going to die. He was slowly and steadily drying out and without any source of water, he was finding it hard to breathe.
But the very moment he thought it was all over, the restaurant ended up being looted... And he found himself being tossed into a wagon filled with water. He cracked open his tired eyes in order to find himself looking directly into the blue-green eyes of a very beautiful person. Mathias fell in love with this person... Before he was tossed into the lake where the currently resides today. (Yes mermaids can live in both salt and freshwater.)
While in the lake, he wandered the waters aimlessly trying to find any source of civilization or his family, because his curiosity and worry was beginning to get the better of him.
After wandering around for a few days living on nothing but some leaves and grass, he began to feel extremely sick and weak. He was lost and alone and he couldn't find his family nor could he find anyone that could help him... And in the span of about three days Mathias thought he was going to die for the second time.
But never avail, because once again he was rescued. He was rescued by a very familiar pair of arms. They were the arms of his mother and father and his older sister. Mathias had never been happier to see his family than he was now. In fact he was so happy that he immediately burst into tears before he blacked out.
When he woke up he found out that the other members of his family had been rescued from the restaurant a few weeks before him. (He hadn't even noticed.) They also told him that they had been worried about him and wondered if he would ever be coming to him or if the pirates had killed him. He then relayed his story to them and they had a very nice reunion, in which Mathias began to remember the days of his childhood once again.
He began to realize how much he missed the ocean, but even more how much he longed for the same kind of freedom that the humans had. He had observed them in the restaurant for so long that he felt an intense amount of jealousy towards their mobility. This created conflict with his underwater lake world, and as a result, unlike his family, he never ended up adjusting to how things were in their new much different home.
Instead the Dane now spends his days wandering the lake bottom collecting trinkets that humans may have dropped and swimming to the top to try and see if there is anyone there that he can talk to or get information from.
Roleplay Sample:
Mathias hated being stuck alone. Everyone knew it. Well… maybe not everyone knew it, but many, many people did know, and sadly enough, Mathias was somehow stuck alone this weekend… or at least he was stuck alone today. He wasn’t too sure how things looked on Sunday, but either way, being all by himself was enough of a reason to drive him out onto the roof. Many people remembered the accident Mathias had gotten into the last time he went out onto the roof. Many of the other students said they remembered hearing the scream and thinking that the world was ending. At times Mathias even wondered if people located closest to the school had heard it.
But either way, ever since that time, Mathias hadn’t found himself feeling all that adventurous to go out onto the roof. But he figured today was as good a day as any, considering that he was by himself, and plus he sort of missed the quiet and peace that the roof brought when he, (hard as it is to believe.) needed these things. So here he was, grabbing a hold of the disgustingly creaky, rusting fire escape, and pulling himself onto the roof.
He was happy to find that the place still looked exactly the same. (Why would it look any different you silly Dane?) And it didn’t seem as though anyone had found it. This actually made him quite happy, and it also meant that he’d probably be able to come back later when he wanted to be alone and he didn’t want anyone else to bot—Suddenly the deep creaking of the fire escape pulled his attention away from the excitement he had about being alone. Damn it. He must’ve spoke too soon! What if it was a teacher!? What if some teacher had seen him wondering up here and was now following him to tell him to get down? So much for an oasis.
Mathias wasn’t going to let himself get caught though, so he quickly ducked down by the air conditioning unit or whatever it was that no one would be able to visibly see him at first glance, and waited for the creaking to stop. But the creaking was replaced by the sounds of footsteps in the gravel, and those footsteps, were the running kind. They weren’t just walking. Someone was being quite dangerous weren’t they? Mathias tried to hold back a chuckle as he peaked from the side of his hiding spot only to see as a thick-dark haired Asian boy almost flung himself over the edge. His heart sped up a moment, only for him to breathe out a small sigh of relief when the boy caught himself. That was good. He didn’t want to see the boy getting hurt… that wouldn’t really be very nice would it?
He continued to watch the boy as he flopped into the middle of open space and let out a contented sigh. Mathias decided it was best to tell the kid now that he was most certainly not alone. Because if Mathias didn’t come out from hiding soon, he’d probably be looked upon as some kind of weirdo creeper if he was caught later. So he decided to take a step out from behind his spot, and he slowly paced over to stand over the boy who was lying on his back.
“Hey there sunshine! Good morning!” He waved cheerfully, “What brings you to the top of the school?” He blinked happily and folded his hands together, waiting for the kid to explain why he was in the Dane’s old favorite hiding spot. He didn’t really mind sharing the spot, but he was still curious as to how the kid figured that you could get into the roof from the fire escape… well sure it was obvious, but not many people sat on roofs did they?
…that was then but then it's true!
