Story Summary
Likes:
☼ Animals-- She prefers animals of the cute variety, though in her eyes, all of them are adorable. Small domestic pets such as rabbits are her favorites, though, as are birds.
☼ Housework-- Eva likes to be helpful and for things to be orderly; cleaning and cooking are enjoyable activities in her eyes.
☼ Flowers-- Picking wildflowers always has been a dream of Lilli's, her favorite flower being, not surprisingly, lilies. However, she also likes orchids as well, a place in her heart for even weeds like buttercups and dandelions.
☼ Making others happy-- She gains her own happiness from that of others', even if it is only a soft hint of a smile.
☼ Quiet-- Eva likes polite conversation like anyone else, but enjoys a nice, comfortable silence every so often as well. Simply sitting and “being” is pleasant for her, so it is good it is something she has a lot of in her tower.
☼ Needlework-- Sewing is both relaxing and time-consuming, yielding useful products, as well; she makes and alters many of the articles of clothing she wears.
☼ Books-- Lilli often has plenty of time on her hands after her regular chores, using it to indulge herself in romance and fantasy novels. She can travel to far away places with the tiny vehicles of the imagination, just enough to satisfy her curiosity, yet also enough to push her escape impulses.
Dislikes:
☔ Violence-- She hasn't been exposed to it all that much, but the sheer thought of it makes her sick to her stomach, even when only reading it in a book.
☔ Startling/Unexpected things-- Eva is a rather soft-spoken girl, and surprises do not always go over well with her.
☔ Receiving-- The girl often considers herself to be a burden when she is given gifts--especially anything expensive. Lili doesn't believe she deserves such nice presents, so like the modest girl she is, she politely refuses. (Though she is also easily persuaded and usually ends up keeping it.)
☔ Inclement weather-- Though she is grateful for the rain that nourishes the earth and plants from which it grows, rain, snow, or any other form of precipitation means she will not be receiving a visit.
☔ Water-- More specifically, large bodies of water such as the sea, the ocean, or even lakes. Eva has never swam before, nor would she be really comfortable in boats.
Any special traits or habits/quirks:
❄ Lilli is not afraid of heights in the slightest. At such a great altitude, she is not fazed by the dizzying distance between her and the ground below.
❄ The length of her hair is simply astounding; it is able to reach all the way from her balcony, approximately seventy-five feet high, all the way to the ground. And even after that, there is excess length. It is an immense hassle, but it does give the girl something to do. Lilli keeps it in either one or two braids, as it is even more in the way loose.
❄ She is exceedingly polite and formal, even with close acquaintances. But because of this, Eva can be too serious at times and blushes at even the lightest impolite statement.
❄ She has modest skill in many of the arts, such as music and drawing, but will not admit that they are anything but that.
Fears:
⚡ Abandonment-- Though she does feel somewhat abandoned in the tower, she knows it is for good reason and not because she is not wanted.
⚡ Being lied to-- Lilli is a very trusting girl and would be heartbroken if she learned that someone--especially a loved one--had been deceiving her.
⚡ Being kidnapped-- She believes her lifestyle to be dreary every so often, but it is all she has ever known. Should she be taken from it, Eva would likely become very distressed.
This love is difficult, but it's real,
The Story
If they happened upon a fairy godmother, what would they wish for?:
Her first instinct would be to wish to be able to visit the world outside just once, but rather than saying something so selfish, she'd likely ask for the fairy to find someone else in greater need of a wish than herself.
Personality:
At a first glance, Eva is a reserved, quiet girl; this is easily one of the most prominent facets of her personality. She tends to stammer a bit because of initial shyness, but the impediments usually fade away after a few minutes of polite conversation. The bashful girl is known to blush at the slightest things, such as when she is only addressed, demonstrating how little it takes to make her become sheepish and flustered. Because of this, as well as her inbred courtesy, she refrains from speaking unless spoken to, which can be misinterpreted for severe timidity.
While she is afraid of sparking conversations, it doesn't mean she is rude or antisocial whatsoever. She is kind by nature, despite her solitary lifestyle; despite the numerous warnings of "bad people," she would, if given the chance, politely and genuinely return conversations with complete strangers. Additionally, Lilli is very generous and humble; she enjoys giving gifts, but doesn't feel "deserving enough" to accept them (but she eventually does because she's easy to persuade). She is also very formal and polite, addressing elders with a "Mr." or "Ms." in front of their first or last name.
Like her name implies, Eva (as in, "Eve," from the Old Testament) can be rather naive. She is no ditz, she is rather intelligent, but she is also completely trusting towards anyone. Being in locked in such a tower has prohibited her to learn how to read different types of people, and wasn't taught who could trusted. Much like a child, she refuses to believe that a person can be truly "evil" and will likely not be afraid to talk to them, even if their reputation is not quite so pure. The curious girl is also very easily distracted, especially by cute things, and can be influenced very easily. This gullibility is not her strongest point, either.
Though she has been alone for such an extended amount of time and has had little guidance, she is actually very mature. She has her childish moments--such as her love for sweets and presents (even though she has issues with actually accepting them)--but most of the time maintains a composed countenance. Despite this, she is incredibly intelligent, having been taught to read, write, and do simple arithmetic, and is rather thoughtful.
While she can easily speak her mind--in a polite way, of course--, lies do not flow from her tongue as easily. Lilli believes lying to be completely disrespectful and abuse of a person's trust--plus she would never want to be lied to. But because of this, she may attempt to avoid truthful thoughts that may offend or upset. It is easily imaginable that she is a terrible liar if the situation calls for it, as well.
Eva is sweet and at times, sensitive, but rarely cries. Even with her constant loneliness and lack of a true family, she has not fallen victim to the overwhelming sadness or solitude many would experience in such a situation. The only instance she would cry would likely be if someone close to her was hurt, or even worse. It goes without saying, but Eva dislikes fighting and any types of weapons. However, being able to defend herself is crucial should anyone attempt to abduct her from her "home."
Story/History:
Once upon a time, there was a kindhearted yet strong King, and an elegant, poised, and soft-spoken Queen. They ruled a small and peaceful land for a number of years and, finally, had an equally beautiful daughter named Eva--her hair, they said, was even more radiant than the sun--on the most temperate and bright day of summer.
After only the passing of but five summers, sudden unrest had seeped into the subjects of the King, Queen, and Princess Eva. They were unable to leave their castle, an enraged mob prohibiting escape. However, going out to greet them was the last thing the royal family wanted to do; the crowd seemed intent on killing their monarchs, though the King had believed he had been fair with them.
Fearing for their innocent daughter's life, Eva's mother and father were forced to leave her in the hands of a trusted regent. It is assumed they both perished by the hands of the impassioned band of people, if they did not escape.
Eva, on the other hand, had been safely relocated to another kingdom by the adviser. He placed her in what he thought was the safest of locations: a tall tower in the middle of a thick forest. It was there that she would stay for the remainder of her life, or at least until her guardian deemed her secure enough to; he would not be responsible for the end of the royal Vogel family line.
For the first few years, he spent most of his time in the tower with the little princess. Eva would not be able to take care of herself at such a young age, nor could she be taught to be literate or to cook. Each time the adviser would visit her, he'd bring her a flower and tuck it gently behind her ear, later pressing it and keeping it preserved in a book for her. She was always attracted to the lilies, and asked for him to bring them more often than any other bloom, so earning the affectionate nickname, "Lilli."
She had not had her hair cut a single time since she was born--save for a small section of fringe on her forehead--, and intended to keep it that way. The regent had no complaints, as her hair reminded him of her mother's, and was a pretty, brilliant shade of wheat-blond. Lilli didn't know exactly why she was reluctant to take a pair of scissors to her long locks; perhaps because of a faint, lingering memory in her subconscious that she was not aware of?
Her hair began to serve another use after she had let it grow out, however. Despite there being a staircase from the base of the tower to the top, it was much more convenient and quick for the regent to climb up via her braided hair. He was beginning to visit less and less, as she was becoming more independent, able to go without his assistance for weeks as long as she had sufficient rations in her cupboard.
All the while, he taught her how to read, write, basic math, as well as some arts such as song and drawing. But even more important were his lessons on the evil of the outside world. Eva was immensely curious about what lay beyond the stones of her tower, but she had been indocrinated to fear it, as well. According to her guardian, nearly all humans were barbarians that lusted for nothing more than the blood of their fellow race. Should she leave the tower, said the adviser, if the others did not get to her, he himself would make sure she would never do such a foolish thing again.
And so, the lost princess continues to reside there, ten years after the death of her parents. There is little to do, but she manages to entertain herself with cleaning, cooking, and the tedious care needed for such long hair. Lilli also is incredibly creative; she can be easily lost in a book, write short little stories to amuse herself, and even is known to doodle what she wishes that "other world" was like. Of course, these drawings are never presented to her guardian; she must keep her curiosity a secret for fear of being punished.
Waiting... She knows she is waiting, but for what, she is uncertain. Eva is thankful for her own patience.

August 2, 1919
Outskirts of Vienna, Austria
Finally, her destination was in sight. The journey had been smooth and without bad weather, but excruciatingly slow. Liechtenstein wondered if it was because of her nation’s weakness because of the war, leading her mind straight to the unfortunate reason for her visit to Austria’s--and formerly her--home: her breaking of their customs treaty.
It was necessary for her country’s survival, but it still tugged at her heart. She’d stayed with Austria for centuries and was finally leaving for--what she was certain was--forever. Needless to say, Lili had nearly turned around multiple times; there had been nothing to distract herself from her thoughts, and the majority of the time, her emotions dictate her actions. However, she had realized it was time to think like a nation--she’d rarely needed to make major decisions that affected her state--and vowed not to turn tail and run or go down without a fight. In spite of this, standing meters away from the entrance, those instincts of “go home!” resurged until they were gradually suppressed again.
Though she herself had only a humble home back in Liechtenstein and was in no place to criticize, she couldn’t help but notice the poor condition of the grounds. The usually uniform and neatly-trimmed trees at the gates seemed scragglier than she remembered, and the intimidating but refined iron gates themselves had been left open. Lili’s brows furrowed in thought. Austria couldn’t have known she was coming; she hadn’t sent a letter ahead of time, though she knew she probably should have and anticipated a light scolding for her appearance without warning or invitation.
Her senses attentive, she warily passed through and approached the large manor. There were few signs of life anywhere around the exterior of the familiar home, which was radically different from the last time she’d been there. Liechtenstein noticed the absence of two or three of the aristocrat’s automobiles; only one remained, parked under a tree. It had seemed to accumulate leaves and sticks that had most likely dropped from the branches above it. She couldn’t help but wonder when it was used last, but her attention was pulled away from the underused vehicle when she stumbled on a rock. In and of itself the occurrence wasn’t all that strange, but never before had she seen pebbles and other debris scattered along the path to the façade of the house. Her uncle figure always made sure the servant-nations had completely cleared the driveway and paths to and around the grounds.
Suddenly, every rational cell in her body was telling her to turn around and go home, that something wasn’t right. However, it was that very reason that made her want to poke around just a bit and investigate. Maybe Lili could figure out what had caused this…ruin, if it could be called that. When her mind jumped to war and the possibility that the mansion had been attacked, her mind was essentially made up.
Her curiosity won the better of her; she cautiously swept her gaze around the front of the estate to verify that she was indeed alone. After making sure of this, she broke off from the walkway leading to the front door and onto a brick-laid path that wandered through the modest but elegant garden. To her dismay, the conditions of the grounds only worsened. It was apparent that Austria was allowing the gardener--Eva couldn’t remember if it was Croatia or Slovenia--to slack off; fallen leaves and dirt littered the path. When she looked for someone tending to the overgrown jungle, even getting on her tiptoes as if it’d help her see, there wasn’t a single nation or human in sight. Her frown deepened slightly in curiosity. Something had definitely happened while she was away to account for such a sight.
Not wishing or needing to see any more, Liechtenstein returned to the front. She tentatively approached the main entrance, feeling as if she were entering an abandoned, haunted manor. Too busy absorbing more of her surroundings, namely the closed curtains, the girl gracelessly stumbled on the last step. After righting herself, she boldly confronted the door and nearly touched it with her knuckles, forgetting for a moment that there was indeed a door knocker. But first, she looked down at the state of her appearance.
Her fuchsia dress was dusty from the dirt roads as well as a lack of washing and tattered from everyday wear and tear, not in the least presentable. Eva attempted to brush it off, but to no avail. Her shoes were also completely unacceptable by any standards, scuffed up and caked with mud in places. She could only imagine what her face and hair looked like; surely she had a dull pallor to her face, the color in her face drained, and her hair limp and falling out of the twin braids. Deciding decency was beyond her power, she temporarily disregarded it and knocked a few times.
After the three curt raps, she released the handle and took a small step backwards. Clasping her hands behind her back, she waited for someone to answer the door. However, that brought up the question: who? Miss Hungary? The slightly irritable Mr. Czechia? Certainly not Austria himself, he was far too classy for that. Liechtenstein shook her head to clear the nagging, negative possibility that it would be, and listened for the sound of footsteps inside.
Don't be afraid, we'll make it out of this mess,
